Subject Area: Science
Grade Level: 10

Lesson Summary
The purpose of this lesson is to teach proper graphing techniques, rules and use to high school science students.

Learning Objectives and Computer Functions
This lesson plan uses 0 objectives.

Problem
Problem Nature
Graphs are a part of everyday life. Students are exposed to them in newspapers, magazines and the news. They are also an important part of standardized test scores such as the CSAP test.

Problem Data
generated

Notes on Using Data
Students will collect their own data in small groups. The data will be entered into a spreadsheet and analyzed. Once the data is compiled it will be entered into a spreadsheet and graphs will be generated as part of the lab write up.

Problem Statement
Becuase we run across graphs everyday, it is important that we are able to create, read, and intrepret graphs and the data that they present.

Data Manipulation
Instructions
The learner used computers at level

Integration Strategies
intermediate

Organization Strategies
Students will be recording their data in spreadsheets, a line graph will be created to illustrate the data.

Elaboration Strategies
The Think Sheet for this lesson is included with the lesson plan.

Results Presentation
The presentation of the lesson findings will take the form of a lab report. The lab report should include title, purpose, materials, procedure, data tables (spreadsheets), graphs (line graphs created using the spreadsheet) and conclusion.

Activities
Activities Before Using the Computer
Students will take notes on the lectures. Students will need to gather supplies for use in the lab. Students will need to hand write a data table and determine how they will format their spreadsheet.

Strategies to develop students' attitudes towards the problem, motivation, and overall mindfulness:
Strategies for specific activities will be discussed prior to implementation.

Activities While Using the Computer
Students will work at the computer indiv

Group Information:
Students will complete labs in pairs but report their findings individually. At the computer, students will enter data into a spreadsheet and generate a line graph. They will also visit a web site on the Internet and complete a WebQuest. Students will use a word processing program to produce their lab write up.

Activities After Using the Computer
Sutdents are to present their findings in a lab report outlining the steps of the scinetific method they used to investigate the problem. The presentation of the finding will be typed using a word processing application.

Supporting Activities
Each group will have access to their own computer so waiting for a computer should not be an issue.

Assessment
Students will be assessed by means of:

Included in the assessment:
The lab report will be used to assess the lesson. A rubric will be created that includes a task list and rating scale. The task list will include the creation of the spreadsheet, the creation of the graphs from the spreadsheets, and presentation of the findings.
